Halves

This week we have been studying Fractions. We have learned about half of shapes and numbers. Today we shared an apple. We had to cut the apple in half. This meant it was cut in the middle and it had to be the same size. Both parts were equal.

We ate our half of the apple for our Healthy Snack.

We Plunge into our topic on Sustainability

Yesterday we went to the hall to watch the DVD "Happy Feet" with the Minnows team.

Pita came to the hall to watch the movie with us.

We watched the DVD to plunge into our new topic 'Sustainability is Forever'.

We had popcorn.

It was funny when Mumble was born because his feet came out first and he bounced around on the ice. When all the other penguins were singing all Mumble could do was dance - he was good at dancing.
Mumble is chased by the big birds, a leopard seal and a killer whale, but he manages to get away. There was a big avalanche where Mumble and his friends race away through an avalanche.
Mumble needs to know more about aliens so he goes to visit Lovelace. He has plastic rings stuck round his neck.
Mumble chases the boat that is stealing their fish to find out where they are going. He swims after them. When he is rescued he is put into a place with other penguins, but they don't understand him.
Finally Mumble gets back to Antarctica with a tracking thing on his back. The people follow him and Mumble gets everyone to dance.

We are going to do lots of talking about what we saw.

Our Garden

We have begun our garden!!! Yahoo!!
Earlier this term we made plans for our garden (this is on our wall).

Last week Mr Phillips (our caretaker) built a box around the garden plots.

Then we added the soil to the boxes. This was fun because we got to use the big shovels to dig up the pile of soil Mr and Mrs Craib had brought to school.

This week we planted some seeds and bulbs with Lyrics Mum, Tania. Some children were then chosen to water them in.
We can't wait till we come back next term to add some more to our garden.

Duffy Books

Last Wednesday, we went to a Duffy Assembly.

Marg Foster came to our assembly. She got some children to play a game with her. They had to clap before catching the ball. Then we had to listen to a story and try to work out which book it was from. Some of these were hard.

When we got back to our class we were excited because we got our own Duffy books.

Mrs Craib read us some of the books. Caleb's was really funny. We couldn't stop laughing.

We read our own books before going to play.

Thanks Duffy Books in Homes, we love our books.

Hollie From the ASB Visits

Yesterday Hollie from the ASB came to our class and she told us about banking.
She became a super hero called Captain Cashtastic. She told us to say 'munch munch, munch' when she said 'Munchers Mash.'

She showed us some notes and coins and we had to put them in order from the smallest to the biggest.

We had to go on a secret mission to find the money clues. The money was on her cape and on her bag.

She told us we had to ' speak to your needs and wait for your wants.'

She went to Money Makety with her friend Aroha - who was Frances in our class.

It was fun having Hollie in our classroom. We loved listening to her story and joining in with the actions.

The Daily Five

Every day we are reading and writing in our classroom.

The daily 5 is
- read for 5 minutes to ourselves
- read to someone else
- have someone read to us
- write a story
- write words.

We are really good at reading to ourselves for 5 minutes. We know we  can do this when we can
- look at the words
- look at the pictures for tricky words
- read in our head
- turn the pages one at a time
- read for at least 5 minutes.

Rocky Bob's visit

On Tuesday Thom brought his rabbit, ‘Rocky Bob’ to school.
We used our ‘Seven Servants’ to ask Thom questions about Rocky Bob.

Who did you get him from?
Nana and Pop had him in their garden.

Why did they give him to you?
Because their dog put him out the cat door and then he hid Rocky Bob. So they thought it wasn’t safe for him.

Where does he live?
In a hutch in our garden.

What does he eat?
He eats pellets, carrots, grass and corn.

How did he get the name Rocky Bob?
My sister wanted to call him Rocky and I wanted to call him Bob so we joined both names together.

We all got to pat Rocky Bob. He was very soft.
